There are days when, all at once,
everything can be lost.
The winter of my fourth year at university,
my father collapsed without warning and never came home.
What remained was a dental clinic, a heavy debt,
and a son who was, at that point, nothing at all.
"There is no longer any way to run."
With that resolve, I studied with everything in me,
and became a dentist.
When I returned to this place once more,
I came to notice a quiet unease.
Treating teeth alone cannot save a person.
Without the return of confidence,
no one can truly look forward again.

And myself — not yet a dentist, not yet anyone at all.

With that single thought, I studied without rest, passed the national examination, and after years of clinical experience, was at last able to return to this place my father had left.
Yet as I continued daily practice, a strong unease began to form within me.
Caries are addressed, fillings placed; periodontal procedures performed. The teeth themselves may indeed be restored.
And yet — I came to wonder — were the patient's lost confidence and heartfelt smile truly being restored?
To lose one's teeth, to lose one's beauty — this is no mere physical absence.
One hesitates to meet others; the joy of meals is forgotten; unconsciously, one begins to hide one's mouth when smiling.
It is a process of slowly losing what cannot be seen, yet matters most — connection to society, and the sense of being truly oneself.
